What a LinkedIn restriction does
A restriction blocks access to some or all LinkedIn features. LinkedIn may apply one for a set period or leave it in place until you complete a review or identity check.
A permanent restriction removes access to the account and its features. Other members can no longer find the profile or send messages to it, according to LinkedIn’s permanent account restrictions page.
Why LinkedIn restricts accounts
LinkedIn describes four main reasons for restricting an account:
- Content violations. Posts, comments or messages may break LinkedIn’s Professional Community Policies.
- Profile violations. A name, photo, work history or other profile information may break those policies.
- Identity or security concerns. LinkedIn may doubt that the profile represents a real person, or it may find signs that someone has taken over the account.
- Automated activity. LinkedIn prohibits third-party software and browser extensions that scrape data, change the site’s appearance or automate activity.

How to recover a restricted LinkedIn account
The correct process depends on the reason shown in your notice.
Content restriction
Sign in and follow the on-screen prompts to ask LinkedIn to review the decision. LinkedIn will check the content again and notify you of the outcome.
Profile, identity or security restriction
Sign in and follow the identity verification steps. LinkedIn does not run this check itself. It uses two outside providers: CLEAR if you are in the United States, Canada or Mexico, and Persona in most other countries. Either way you upload a photo of a government-issued ID, and you may be asked for a selfie so your face can be matched against it.
LinkedIn also lists other ways to verify your identity if you do not want to submit an ID or photo. The options available depend on your location and account.
Automation restriction
Disable the software or browser extension named in the notice. LinkedIn says it will restore access at the time shown in a temporary suspension notice.
Some members can also submit a contact form after signing in and ask LinkedIn to take another look. LinkedIn says this option is still being introduced and may not appear for every account. Its automated activity page has the current instructions.
How long a restriction lasts
LinkedIn does not use one duration for every account restriction. A temporary automation or high-activity restriction should show an end time in the notice. Content reviews and identity checks follow their own processes.
Repeated temporary restrictions may lead to a permanent restriction. LinkedIn also says it may permanently restrict an account after one severe content violation. It names terrorism, extremely violent content, child sexual abuse material and severe sexual harassment as examples.
If LinkedIn permanently restricts your account, use the contact link on its permanent-restriction page. LinkedIn does not promise that it will reverse the decision.
What not to do
Do not create a replacement profile while you are trying to recover the original account. LinkedIn does not allow one person to maintain multiple profiles. Use the review, verification or support process attached to the restricted account.
Do not pay a third party that promises to restore your access. Only LinkedIn can remove the restriction.
How to reduce the chance of another restriction
Keep your profile information accurate, protect your login and follow LinkedIn’s content policies. Remove unauthorized automation tools or browser extensions if LinkedIn identifies them.
LinkedIn may also restrict an account that sends a high volume of messages, comments, posts or other content in a short period. It does not publish a universal safe limit.
